Just in case anyone thought it was a typo, to formicate = to swarm like or with ants. Since masses of ants appear to writhe or undulate (as do maggots), it seemed a good choice for the 'almonds'.
I wonder how many languages have a similar connection between ants & itching? Is it universal? much fascination with formication (http://www.livejournal.com/users/plantgirl/120024.html)
