Hm. I was just thinking about old 1980's antidrug public service announcements, the ones where they have the kids singing, "you have the righ-yie-yie-ight to say NO!"

The phrase "you have the right to say no" is an amazing piece of spin-doctoring of the legal reality that "you have no right to say yes". I mean, looking at the word "right" in its legal sense.

But "don't do it or we'll lock you up, unless you're rich, white or named Bush" doesn't have the same ring to it.

Did you ever see Reefer Madness? It's a totally hysterical piece of anti-marijuana propaganda from 1938.

I know *of* it, and have seen some of the old documentaries from that period. But no, I still haven't seen Reefer Madness.

Hey Steph (if you're reading this), remember "U.S.S. VD, Ship of Shame?" We went to see that when we'd been dating what, a week?

nope, don't remember that a bit. (I even looked up a synopsis on the web to see if it would ring a bell, but nope) Maybe I missed that one? That was the best year of Sunday movies ever though! They really went downhill after that.

Hm. I guess it's possible it wasn't you I saw that with, but I remember seeing it with a girlfriend, and I can't think who else it could have been anywhere near that time...

Or maybe it was some other old documentary about how terrible venereal diseases were. But I don't know what else it would be.

I guess it must have been another, though, because I remember a strong landbound theme rather than a nautical one.

Do you recall a movie with a showgirl getting syphilis accidentally and the terrible consequences it has on her eventual husband?
