noahgibbs: Me and my teddy bear at Karaoke after a day of RubyKaigi in HIroshima in 2017 (Default)

Urgh. I find myself contemplating something. It's not something I actually swore off, and I remember, many years ago, when it even seemed like a good idea.

It does again.

It's probably time for me to change cars. This one has done well for me for quite some time, but the transmission is going to keep getting worse, and it's going to cost more than the car's value to fix it. There's one that doesn't bode well for trade-in value. And just to keep things interesting, I've mentioned that I'm buying a house, yeah?

So. That "comtemplating something" bit. A ridiculous image, for those of you that know my origins: Me in a pickup truck.

But it would make a lot of sense. They're pretty mechanically simple, so they tend to last well. I take the occasional long trip, but usually only with one more person, and there'd be cargo space in the back. I transport furniture, and it would work much better for that.

And it'd be kinda cool to have two primary transporation modes, one of which could carry the other. I actually do car repair stuff more often than road trips or moving furniture, and being able to handle the there-and-back aspects all by my lonesome would be nice. A pickup truck and a motorcycle would do that quite nicely.

I need to find out what's up with the financial aspects of all this, what the trade-in is for my car ($5000 or a bit less according to one site I consulted), and what an old pickup truck with AC in decent shape would cost me. Gas mileage isn't going to be a big deal, I don't put many miles on my car these days. The house in Fremont answers the question, "but what if I move somewhere with weather?" -- not any time soon, I won't.

Oy. I'm just trying to change all the major pieces of my life right now, aren't I?

It wouldn't be fun otherwise!

It seems to me that life is controlled by inertia, when you are at rest, you stay at rest. When you are in motion, you remain in motion and gain momentum. That seems to be what is happeing to you.

You said yourself that a number of things in your life have been at a standstill for a while, guess you were just getting revved up for some major motion.

I think you will be okay, you are a smart cookie! Mmmmm, cookies.

I've also considered a pickup truck to replace my current car. However, I'm now leaning towards a car (Subaru WRX) and trailer. The car is more fun to drive by itself and if you need to tow your bike, you can self-load a trailer, but you can't self-load a bike onto a pickup as easily.

What do you wind up paying for a trailer? I'm curious because cost is kind of an issue right now.

Adding hitch to a car is roughly $200 (if you don't want to do any of the installation).

Uhaul motorcycle trailer is $15/day.

Buying a trailer is looking at around $1k for a good one.

Ooohh... if I were buying a car, I'd be looking at the station wagon version of the WRX.
Though, oddly, I thought I saw something on the Subaru lot the other day (it's occasionally on my commute) that looked like a King-Cab version of the Brat. Are any of you old enough to remember that car as being new?

No, but thats kinda how ma3d, Matt Andrews, described his new Subaru Baja.
They are kinda neat, technically a truck in the state of California.

Yeah, it is kinda humorous. I was gonna get one right up until crunch time and then I bought a Saturn.
Trucks are great for camping and other stuff though.

Makes sense. I'm just curious how they do for hauling regular luggage on longer trips. I'm sure they do okay, it just seems less courteous to luggage than a regular trunk.

Regarding Luggage.
I have a hard time believing the back of a truck can be any worse than what airport handlers will end up doing to luggage in the end.

I highly approve of your subject line.

That is all.

Since I own a truck...

You might want to check if a standard or extended truck bed would be a good fit for your bike. And there are parts to help strap bikes in that you can get.
I also recommend an extended cab so you have the area behind your seats and you don't have the sun directly on the back of your head all the time.
The only bad things are the so-so gas mileage and the problem with parking a long vehicle in some areas.
Let me know if you have any other questions about trucks.
