I think I've found it.

A house.

I need to be sure, but I've had a look around inside it, and I know the price, and I've talked to the realtor and the lending agent and my investment guy...

Yeah.

That was fast. I mean, I looked at a bunch of places, but still. That was fast.

It'd be in Fremont, so I need to get some driving times. They don't look too bad, but I need to be sure. And I need to see how the on-street parking is, though it looked pretty good. And it's right near a school, so resale value is unlikely to be a big problem, particularly in the time frame I'm looking at (unmarried, no kids, no quick prospects for either one).

Hey, Brian -- you'll be getting a message shortly. Two-car garage and a bedroom spare, plus it's further South than I'd figured :-)

Fair enough. Looking at pictures of him on the web, I see some similarities. Except when he looks kind of like Robin Williams, and then there's no similarity at all, I hope.

Hmm -- where in Fremont?

My driving times to San Mateo are in the 20-40 minute range. I'm not sure where you are going these days. The Dumbarton bridge traffic is ok, except when it isn't.

I don't know Fremont so well, but it's not too terribly far off 880, about halfway between the 237 and 84 exits.

I'm in luck, I'll be driving to Sunnyvale/SanJose and to the Berkeley area, but not to San Mateo.

And I'm on a motorcycle, so traffic on the Dumbarton won't be too bad. I'd worry about commuting on the bike, except I've been doing it without incident for the last year and a half, rain or shine.

I would suggest you try the commute from your place to work at 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning. I think you will see the worse of it.

On a bad day, Pumpkin's school (Mowry/880) back to my house can take 40 minutes in a car.

I know nothing about California traffic or city locations.
However, I can't stand traffic, so I get to work and leave earlier than the other people I work with to avoid the traffic, which works out pretty well.
Today I didn't only had one place where I had to stop for traffic, and only for about two minutes. On days where the traffic really blows, I cut my lunch break a little bit (really, an hour is a long time, considering I work a 2 minute walk from some really great resteraunts, that will give you take out) and still go home early to miss traffic.

That being said, how does the bike work out in Rush Hour?
I've been sort of half pining after a vespa, but I'm not sure if I could take that to work or not.

California traffic can be quite bad if you take the wrong streets or highways at the wrong times. But the bike works out really well at rush hour. I've made the trip to Berkeley at less-than-pleasant times repeatedly (the Plough's in Berkeley, and I'm dating a girl in Orinda). The bike cuts the trip from a very frustrating 90+ minutes to a significantly nicer 60 minutes, plus you don't have to spend significant time stopped waiting for traffic to move at all.

That said, it sounds like traffic where you are wouldn't make as much of a difference, so you'd get less out of the Vespa that way. S'okay, it'd still be a lot more fun :-)
