I'm in Phoenix, AZ for the week at a work conference -- RailsConf, for those who know Ruby-land.

There was a Safeway about a mile from my hotel, so now I have a nice assortment of dried fruit, nuts, cheese and salami for meals here. Eating out all the time gets expensive regardless, but the restaurants near here also kinda look less-than-inspiring.

I was good and did *not* bring back a big bottle of rum to finish in four days. This might or might not be because a Safeway in Arizona doesn't have an inspiring rum selection.

Indeed! Arriving a little early and going to the grocery store first worked out really well.

for many years, I thought I hated rum.

during my early drinking daze, I played a few drinking card games & we used rum&coke as our drink of choice. I got so sick from it, every time someone said the word "rum" afterwards, I'd cringe..and puke a little in my mouth.
years passed, and my favorite drink was a white russian. I had a friend make one for me once, & would order it whenever I went out, never knowing what kahlúa was. I just knew it as a coffee liqueur.
a couple days ago, I googled kahlúa, can't remember why. in doing so, I read that it is RUM...

total. mind. melt. so, I drank rum all those years, and never knew.

seriously. I once drank an entire bottle of 80 proof kahlúa in one evening.

To be fair, Kahlua doesn't taste much like rum :-)

I hate vodka in a similar way -- started drinking bad vodka, still don't like it. But I still make vanilla extract out of vodka, because you can barely taste it.

At least, good vodka. I use Tito's. Reasonably cheap, six-times distilled. It tastes like nothing. Makes great vanilla extract.

yeah. the rum I drank as a youngster was definitely cheap. god only knows. :D
