There's a great programming environment aimed at beginners and kids called Scratch that I tried out awhile back. It's actually really nice and surprisingly well-designed and pleasant to use.

Shamus Young just put together a really good quickie description of it. I recommend it. After all, I'm never going to get around to writing my equivalent :-)

Oh, the kids love Scratch. An asteroids game we built allowed me to further demonstrate the usefulness of trig to Justin (built multiplayers and gravity wells, it was fun.) And we made a couple of other things like the game where you're worms crawling around picking up food, getting longer, and trying not to collide into yourself or each other. And a tic tac toe.

I will bet there's a blog somewhere for geeky parents with geeky kids that talks about these sorts of things and I should find it.
