Donkeys are odd creatures. They have many interesting characteristics, but the one that I was remembering this afternoon is their odd tendency to reproduce successfully with creatures who are not donkeys. Mules are the classic result of such breeding.

But I was just remembering that there's a such thing as a zedonk (a donkey/zebra cross), and that I've actually seen one in Santa Barbara, and that it has nifty stripes on its butt (but not so much the rest of it). Something like a mule but with zebra instead of horse ancestry must be about the foulest-tempered animal on the planet.

Huh. The ones you posted a link to have kinda different stripe distribution than the one I saw. Maybe it's different for every one or depends on the kind of donkey or something...

I wonder if the stripe patterns are unique for each animal, kinda like fingerprints. Maybe one day some evil fascist government'll use genetic engineering and the force all people to be genetically modified so that they'll walk around with a unique stripe pattern for easy identification. Then, with a simple network of cameras all over the place, the government will be able to easily keep tabs on everyone.

Also, it'll be helpful for people like me who are bad with faces. Unique strip patterns sound like they're much easier to remember. "Let's see, you look like Mr. Short-Short-Long-Short-Stripes-on-your-forehead..."
