noahgibbs: Me and my teddy bear at Karaoke after a day of RubyKaigi in HIroshima in 2017 (step up for you)
[personal profile] noahgibbs
Heya, folks. It appears my wedding to [livejournal.com profile] rightkindofme will *not* be on June 16th. That would be literally the day after her last day of work for the school year - planning a wedding around that would be very stressful, so we're not doing it. Plans for what we're going to do are still up in the air, but we're pretty sure we're not going to have a public ceremony, or even a ceremony attended by more than immediate family. In fact, not even that, though that's a discussion for another post.

On an (*cough*) unrelated topic, we had that lovely weekend in the B&B this past weekend, up on Lake Tahoe, just across the border from Nevada. Oh, and my cuticles are awful. Plus I got a new piece of jewelry.

[Note following many of my posts: my house is undamaged, my motorcycle is fine, my body is in the same shape it has been, and my relationship with [livejournal.com profile] rightkindofme isn't ending any time soon. But, um, we're not engaged any more. You should click that link above if you want an explanation. No, seriously. Now would be a good time.]

sorry to hear about the cuticles.
congratulations!

Wish we could do the same, but our extended families would probably kill us.

That's the wrong way of thinking. Don't let your families pressure you. We had exactly the kind of wedding we wanted to have. It probably helps that our families didn't pressure us, and we never felt the need to elope (maybe talked about it once or so is all). If you want to get married that way, do so. It's your choice, after all: Do you want to have a big affair to remember, or do you feel that something tiny is more intimate, more romantic, more convenient, cheaper, and more spontaneous? Just do whatever really suits you and forget about the family and friends. Everyone will be happy for you in the end; your friends won't stop being your friends, and your family almost certainly won't disown you over your choice. Never forget that the wedding and reception are all about YOU--everyone else is just along for the ride. It's like when a woman delivers a baby--even the husband is just along for the ride. Nobody else gets a say unless you empower them. In Scrum terms, you are the pigs, and the family is all chickens. Now, the chickens can make a lot of noise, and try to wrest control one way or another (sometimes through the application of money or "assistance") but you are always empowered to refuse and make it your own affair. You'll remember it the rest of your life, and for once you do get to have it your way.

From: [identity profile] angelbob.livejournal.com
Sadly, her ring is equally unremarkable right now - we're waiting for a jeweler in NYC who has taken his sweet time... After waiting for a Jeweler in Fremont who was even more unresponsive.

So you're looking at temporaries on both of us :-)

Well, not temporaries exactly, but not the bigger and more impressive ones that we're trying to be allowed to pay for.

Congratulations. Welcome to the club.

Nope, that looks right to me. Plans *are* still up in the air, we're not having a public ceremony, and we're not having one attended by non-family :-)

I have to admit, my first thought was, literally, "you asshole! you mean I don't get to go to the wedding???!?!?!"

and then I got over it.

Congratulations to both of you, and a very funny way of expressing/announcing it.
