Hrm. Any of you who know a bit about car or motorcycle batteries, this one's for you.

The drip-charger I've got makes several semi-apocalyptic claims about how bad batteries are and what they can do to you, and what safety measures are necessary. They don't, by and large, seem like more of an overreaction than I'd expect under the circumstances. But they claim that I need to attach at least an additional 24" of insulated battery cable between the negative battery terminal and the negative charger clip. They make no such claim for the positive terminal of the battery.

Is this just so you can stand farther from the battery when connecting the terminal, or is it really necessary? Anybody know?

As far as I know, it's purely to keep the spark away from the battery (and the potentially explosive gases inside or near it).

Modern sealed batteries should never outgas the hydrogen byproducts, anyways, but it certainly can't hurt to be careful. Standard jumper cables should do the trick nicely.

Heh :-)

Are you still out here, by the way?

I'm just assuming you have been since Jonah mentioned something about climbing with you and Brian...

If so, allow me to quote another recently-visiting friend: "always visit Noah when you're hungry" :-P

We could, like, get together and do dinner or something if you want.

Unfortunately, no. My time got used up much more quickly than I'd hoped. I'm sorry I didn't get out to see you like I had planned.

Obviously, this means I'll have to plan another trip.

Obviously.

Well, he's already taken you to La Fondue. I'll have to figure out where the next place to take you is :-)

Not that I would mind another trip to La Fondue. At all. Really.
