Okay, I mentioned a stupid thing I was afraid was going to happen in the latest Harry Potter book that wound up not happening. So this time, an LJ cut.

With the potions book that was written by the Half-Blood Prince, I was worried that it was going to be a retread of the book by Tom Marvolo Riddle. Once Horcruxes were explained, I worried that the book was going to turn out to be another of Voldemort's Horcruxes.

I thought that the spell book might have been Tom Riddle's, especially given that Slughorn taught him.

But then I was wondering why Slughorn was always mentioning Lily Evans (later Lily Potter) as being a potions genius, but never mentioned Snape as a student, who would have probably been in Lily's classes. That is when I started wondering if it wasn't Snape's book, since the omission nearly became too obvious coupled with Snape's potion skill being repeatably lauded throughout the book.

But that is 20/20 and I didn't pick it up until Snape wanted to see the book so badly. I found the potions book a really nice mechanism and I am glad it wasn't "yet another of Lord Voldemort's things."

As for Horcruxes, [livejournal.com profile] imnotbob thinks that Harry might be a Horcrux with the foundation laid down in Voldemort's snake. I am not sure I buy that, but it makes for interesting speculation.

It also explains the "Neither can live while the other survives" which I've always been hearing as "they're both going to go as once".

Dunno. Given Voldemort's plans for physical immortality, I have trouble with the idea that he'd put a chunk of his soul in anything (or anybody) that would eventually die of old age.

I thought the snake was a fairly odd place to put part of his soul, too. I think maybe the magic will make the snake immortal, too, possibly, or maybe he would just find a way to transfer it.

Remember that we don't know the snake is one; so far it's just a guess.

Well, in Harry's case, the supposition is that it was inadvertent and that Voldemort doesn't know. It happened when he tried to kill Harry and it backfired.

It would explain the parseltongue, being able to see into his thoughts, and some of the other abilities that Harry has shown.

i disagreed with [livejournal.com profile] imnotbob on this based on two things:

1. there are only 6 horcrux's: the locket, the snake, the cup, the ring, the book, something of ravenclaw or griffindor. unless harry could be considered something of griffindor's, the total number of horcruxes is already accounted for and harry can't be one.

2. voldemort wouldn't make harry a horcrux only to kill him, i don't think it could be accidentally, and even if he wanted to make harry one, there wouldn't have been enough time to do it after he killed lilly.....

IMHO

2 I think I agree with, but as for 1, we don't know for sure what a couple of the Horcruxes are; Dumbledore was just guessing.

This could still happen.

It could also explain why snape was so dead-set on looking for it.

Well, other then "THat bastard! He's got my old potions book!"
