I've found a place on-line that sells Taylor Fladgate forty-year tawny port for slightly less than an arm and a leg. Two bottles are speeding their way toward me even now.

I've found a good chocolatier nearby.

Rick's Rather Rich has reopened, with a new owner and a lot of new recipes.

There are two other ice-cream places I'm told I've really got to try.

Last night I wound up lazing around and finishing some of the way-too-much new reading material I've got sitting around.

Things could be much, much worse.

woohoo! I've been trying to go there with a friend for about 4 months now. Every month or so we'd check and find they were still closed.

What're you reading?

Last night was the latest Terry Pratchett book to hit paperback (the Thief of Time) and part of an out-of-print Call of Cthulhu gamebook :-)

I didn't say it was intellectual reading material.

Mostly lately I've been reading RPG sourcebooks, cheap fiction and books on art and drawing. I feel like such a geek...

Where?

The 30 year old port [livejournal.com profile] jessed brought out around midnight after the wedding was some of the most amazing alcohol I've ever tasted. :) I'd love to know of good labels & sources of such excellence.

I couldn't tell you whether that was a tawny or a vintage (or something else) port without seeing it, but the absolute best commercially-available ports are Taylor Fladgate and Fonseca. Graham's and Warre's run a close third and fourth in my experience, though there's more debate there. Not that there's no debate -- Taylor versus Fonseca seems to be either a year-by-year or a vi-versus-emacs thing :-) I go for Taylor because I prefer tawnies, and to my mouth the best tawny available, period, is the Taylor 40-year.

Anyway. "http://samswine.com". It's about $130 a bottle, but unlike many other ports you can tip back a glass now and then for six to nine months easily without it spoiling or even losing all that much. It hits absolute peak maybe two months after you first open the bottle -- port likes to breathe a bit.

And if you don't think $130 a bottle is reasonable, you haven't done much looking for Taylor 40-year tawnies :-) You can certainly spend more than that on port but they tend to be very old vintage ports. Often very, very good, but not something you're likely to be able to get consistently.
