noahgibbs: Me and my teddy bear at Karaoke after a day of RubyKaigi in HIroshima in 2017 (chimpdaddy)

There seems to be lots of 5-HTP advertised on the 'net. Anybody know a good reliable source of reasonably pure stuff? I know that in general, the sort-of-pharmaceuticals market can be quite shady (consumer reports certainly found interesting things in some related markets).

Anybody got a source that they have reason to like? And perhaps better yet, a tolerably cheap one?

I saw a bottle in Safeway this evening.

Why'd you delete the post after this one?

Made it private. Decided I didn't feel like dealing with the flak I'd likely get from it. Maybe later I will.

I do that occasionally with things that are just going to gratuitously stir up a hornet's nest rather than productively stirring up a hornet's nest.

Yeah, I'm usually quicker about it. I've probably done it three or four times since 2001.

Why are you buying it on the web? Isn't it available at health-food stores that have the advantage of, say "not selling V[1]a gra"?

Next time I'm ordering math books from Amazon, I'll remember to be ashamed of my sources.

Sadly, random brands in health-food stores often aren't any better tested than the ones on the 'net. Again, the market in general is pretty shady.

If I get a chance to swing by a whole foods this week, I'll refresh my memory of the name of the brands I used to recommend when I worked there. I can't recall them off the top of my head at the moment.

You can get 5-htp at your local GNC, in (of all places) the weight-loss department.

I've used 5-HTP from a company called Now Foods. I got it at Whole Foods. Its done good things for me when my seratonin has been made low, but I've never taken it long term.

Jarrow from Vitamin Express in Berkeley

My gal takes Jarrrow brand 5-HTP that she gets from Vitamin Express in Berkeley.

Sounds good. I will look into both the brand and the store.

What brand did you end up trying? Are you still taking it, and if so, how often? It's important to avoid improperly produced stuff with contaminants. I've read that you should not take Vitamin B6 concomitant with 5-HTP.

I hadn't known that you shouldn't take B6 and 5-HTP together. I violated that rule during a lot of the time I was taking 5-HTP.

I'm trying to remember the name of the stuff I took. It made me slightly nauseous, but apparently that's a frequent side-effect of 5-HTP.

Jarrett? Something that sounded kind of like that.

Jarrow - apparently somebody recommended it to me above.

Did 5-HTP fail to help you? Did it make you tired? Have you found something better?

It gave me the occasional extra cheerful moment (I think), but also made me distinctly nauseous in the mornings after taking it. I figure it pretty much came out even on that one, and I stopped taking it after a few weeks when the effect seemed to be getting no stronger.
