Anton and I moved his new (well, new to him) milling machine yesterday. Our best estimate is that it weighs between 700 and 800 lbs. We moved it in pieces, some of which still probably weighed about 150lb.

As he says, he'd better be careful where he reassembles it, 'cause it's *not* going anywhere after that.

Granted we haven't hung out much in RL, but I have a hard time seeing you as angsty. I mean, everytime I picture you in black at a coffee shop it's much more beatnik spouting upbeat rhythm poetry than it is mopey goth.

Yeah. I come through pretty upbeat in person, but I do a bit more angsting online.

Everyone angsts more on-line. It's a guilty pleasure, IMO.

What's a milling machine? It sounds like farm equipment...?

It's metalworking equipment. The idea is that there's an arm with a cutting head (there are different interchangeable shapes of cutters to attach) which moves up and down or across in two dimensions. Anton's milling machine is about fifteen years old, so it's electric but very simple by modern standards, but really good milling machines can be programmed to make lots of sequential, very exact cuts. Especially good ones are fully computer-controllable.

Anton's just does one very exact cut at a time, I think, based on a keypad :-)

This one will be something like six feet tall when fully assembled. At least, that's my best guess. The extra height and width allow for more turns on teh worm gears (rods with metal spirals around them to make a motor's energy act very slowly and with incredible strength), and the motor is very powerful.

So basically, it'll let him cut through metal like butter with the hardened tool-steel cutting heads.

Oh...well...I suppose everyone could use a massive metalworking machine...for...cutting...um...t-bars?

Anton does robotics stuff. And things with cars. I'm not sure exactly what he wants the mill for, though.

Oooh, toys! Now I want to visit Anton's workshop. Do you know which milling machine he got?

Nope. Just that it's huge and about fifteen years old.
