noahgibbs: Me and my teddy bear at Karaoke after a day of RubyKaigi in HIroshima in 2017 (popular monkey)

Today will be day #3 of boot camp (I'm on the flex plan, 3x per week for five weeks rather than 5x). So far, so good, but it *is* still week numero uno. I'm eating a lot more potassium, so with luck I can keep my muscles from getting *too* sore. I know yesterday was not a happy time for my abdominal muscles.

Saw [livejournal.com profile] boot_slut last night, for the first time in distinctly too long. Yay! We had fun. And port. They're a good combination.

Bed shopping soon. I need a new mattress. The old one is on its last legs, so to speak. Anybody want a big impressive headboard and footboard that won't fit my new king-sized mattress? They're the Pier One "Pyramid" series, if that helps.

Oooh. Did the mattress shopping thing a couple of years ago. There's a really great mattress manufacturer up in Hayward that sells direct for far less than the shops like Sleep Train or Mattress Discounters. Fred bought his bed from them, and I was jealous because I'd already bought mine and his was even better. Also, shop around A LOT. It's amazing how much one mattress will vary by 1. name and 2. price from location to location. We finally got our mattress for $800 less than Sleep Train's asking price... from Sleep Train. They take competitor's prices, and we wanted a reputable place to purchase from, so that's how it went. Anyway, if you want some tips, just holler.

I might be interested in the headboard and footboard. Any idea on how long they are?

How tall? How wide? They're Queen sized, so the width is standard for that.

Or are you worried about the height or depth?

Might I kindly (and innocently, with no ulterier motives) suggest one of these beds? I'm planning on buying one myself when I buy my house...

Wide, sorry... and what I'm trying to figure out is if I have enough room in my Honda Element for them or if I will need to borrow a truck.

You can suggest it, but at $3000 per, I'll be considering the wisdom of that purchase quite carefully :-)

I like the idea, but I don't think I can currently afford it.

Maybe I should borrow you some weekend and go mattress shopping. I really need to replace the single I have now.

If you need to borrow a truck and you're anywhere near Fremont, keep me in mind. I've got a little pickup that would hold 'em nicely.

I'll warn you, BTW, that my frame is a queen-size. So you may have trouble using it with a single mattress.

It's a touch over 65" in the longest direction, and also significantly tall (this is the headboard - the footboard is the same width and depth, but shorter).

*nod*

The plan is to ultimately end up with a bed that fits at least two comfortably. The single doesn't cut it and needs to go bye bye.

Okay, so the thing to do is to start by going to one or two of the major chains (like Sleep Train) and decide which features you like best. Then shop elsewhere to compare prices. The major mattress chains all have extraordinary mark-ups. Go to small furniture stores. Go to "Select Sleep" in Union City on Whipple. They're a mattress manufacturer and will generally make a bed with your specification of features and do it for a great price. Fred's bed was 50% less there than at Sleep Train with the same feature set. Also, check IKEA. They make good mattresses with a nice feature sets for far less than most retailers. And when I say feature set, I mean things like interlink springs or individually pocketed coils. Interlinked springs are sturdier, but individually pocketed are better for sharing a bed since you don't feel each other's motion as much. Then there's toppers - memory foam, plush, foam rubber. You may be surprised what feels good after laying there for 20 minutes or so. Don't be shy about just lying around the mattress store. Also, in my experience, the sales guys at Mancini's were the most pushy and least knowledgeable. Anyway, there's a lot of decision points, but it's kinda fun. So yeah, if ya wanna go shopping, I'm game.

At the porn place (where I used to work) they have a shop downstairs where they build most of their props & all the sets etc. One of the guys built a bed almost exactly like the Dore Alley version for one of the sets. It's gorgeous! And the guy said he's build me one!!!! However, there's still the paying for materials & such - so it's still out of my price range. damnitall! And the fact that it was built all in 1 piece, making it not quite so practical for those of us who don't have porn set bedrooms.

I'm currently planning to be at a class in San Jose next Thursday. We could get together after the class if you're willing to do late....
