noahgibbs: Me and my teddy bear at Karaoke after a day of RubyKaigi in HIroshima in 2017 (my squishy)

Yesterday was my first day of boot camp. No, not military boot camp. This is an exercise program at Stanford.

I managed to run a mile in 8:49 as part of running a mile and a half in 14:02. That's not great, but all things considered, I'll take it. I also managed to do 60 push-ups in two minutes, which is okay, and about 45 of those were in the first minute, which is pretty damn good. I did only 65 USMC sit-ups in two minutes - my middle is a tub of goo, at least compared to where it should be. However, that was still well above average for the group, so my expectations are perhaps a tad unreasonable. Also, USMC sit-ups are a lot harder than crunches, so I'm *really* not comparing myself to my years-ago total of 130. That was crunches, and this number is not.

If it helps, apparently I'd need 80 sit-ups in two minutes to qualify as a US marine (among other physical requirements, obviously). So 65's not awful.

I kept referring to myself as "getting squishy in the middle". [livejournal.com profile] xeyda, cute girl that she is, now refers to my tummy as "Squishy", and when I talk about boot camp sounds sad and says things like "bye bye, Squishy!"

I figured I'd share. Some things are too cute not to.

that sounds like the kinda thing I oughta do. Unfortunately, I need to get off the travel track at work before it makes sense. I can't justify spending money for a program I am going to miss half of the sessions of. Heck, I've been wanting to just sign up for yoga or pilates at my own gym at work but for the same reason I haven't been (the other classes at the gym are free and I can go whenever but the yoga and pilates cost money).

Boot camp actually has a program where you get a card that basically says "I'm gonna do ten sessions some time in the next three months" and you bring it in for your ten sessions.

So actually, they've got something specifically designed for travelling folks. Google for "TimeOut Services" and you'll get their web site, then click "Community Bootcamp" on the menu.

I really like programs where I pay by the session, not by a certain length of time. I've decided, at least for my bellydance lessons, that $10 is a reasonable amount to pay someone to make me work really hard for an hour and a half.

I'd love to be able to do situps again. I should keep working on it. Right now they hurt my back too much. Sigh.

Squishy!

"I shall call him squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my squishy Come on, squishy Come on, little squishy

Ow Bad squishy, bad squishy !!"

The mind boggles.

Oooh. I've been meaning to do this at Stanford since I'm here anyway for work. Hopefully about the time you run through the course, I'll be over satan's-own-cough (tm) and the ceili will be up and functioning and I can ask you if it's worth it.

I've actually been through several previous sessions of boot camp. While I've never gone regularly more than three days a week, I did it for about six months when I first started.

I highly recommend it. I lost 40lbs in those six months, though I've gained a lot of it back. My body is an entirely different shape than it was before those sessions.

If you're at Stanford, you should come say hi sometime. My experiences there thus far have been more like "trial by fire" than boot camp, and way less conducive to reducing squishiness, unless you count racing through the hospital at social worker warp speed. . . seeing someone who's merely sweaty rather than sick would be a fun distraction.

Wow. There that's interesting. You are the second person who has mentioned going to boot camp. Good luck with that!

Oh yeah. She's not doing it at Stanford. I forget where she said it was, though....
