Turns out that the import limit into Japan for alcohol is 3 bottles, each about 3/4 of a liter. So that doesn't sound all that restrictive. And for excess alcohol brought in, the duty is 150 Yen, which is between $1.00 and $1.50. Definitely not a significant problem.

There turns out to be a very polite government web site on the topic.

No food in or out that is fresh. Baked goods, are fine.

If you bring back Japanese cheese, be sure to hide it well. I hear Customs is pretty nuts about cheese infractions out there.

I recall discussions about vistors to the country bringing gifts. I'm curious whether the 3 bottles of alkie "for personal use" is the limit even if you intend to give them to other people.

I believe so. I know that's how it works in the U.S. Above that isn't restricted, though, just taxed. And at $1.50 a bottle, I can afford to bring a pretty fair volume of CA wine with me, especially since I tend to buy the good stuff.

So the question's really just my carrying capacity.

Potentially, yeah. I'll probably put up a "call for requests" at some point. What I need to do is figure out how much stuff I'm taking and how much won't come back.

But assuming space (which I think should be fine), I'd be happy to.
