noahgibbs: Me and my teddy bear at Karaoke after a day of RubyKaigi in HIroshima in 2017 (bearded monkey god)

I feel vaguely like I should be complaining. I have perfectly good reasons to complain. But my heart's not in it. Instead, I'm busy cursing Brezsny's sense of humor for being like mine, in that abstract, obviously-he-planned-my-mishaps-cause-he's-an-astrologer silly way.

My monitor finished dying. This one's been a long time coming, but it's no surprise. The timing? That surprised me.

I say that because my last day at NVidia is Friday. I've known this since, um, 4:30pm yesterday, give or take. I'll explain more on that one later today.

I'm having a going-away dinner, not lunch, because today I've got a dentist appointment at lunchtime, and tomorrow I'm going to lunch with a bunch of ex-Palm guys. The schedule was already crowded with prior commitments, as it were.

So what's the deal with Brezsny? Well, he said: "One of the best ways to stay on top -- which is where you are now, right?". He said it yesterday. And I said, "huh? I'm not on top of things. For starters, my job sucks." And, y'know, today that's fixed. I've got a month of severance to live on (or just a bit more), time to job hunt, and several of my oh-god-I-don't-have-time-for-that problems just went away.

More later, after my dentist appointment.

Errr. I'm glad your job doesn't suck anymore?

Yeah. That's how I feel about it. If it takes me a month or more to find a new job, I expect I'll feel differently.

Aw dude. Sorry about the layoff, if that's what it is. But you sound pretty cool with it.

Hm. I hope the job hunt is relatively easy and painless. I will send good karma vibes in your direction.

Currently 85 positions open in Sunnyvale. Great place to work. NVidia is a customer so you get inexplicable, somewhat ineffable bonus points during the interview process.

Ummmm . . . ouch

I would imagine that is a gut punch of sorts.
Talk to Kevin, from what I understand Google has this real hard-on for CMU grads.

I hear that Google is the only recruiting department that PayPal fears, which implies good things about them.

I roll well with punches of most sorts. Yesterday, for instance, I found myself thinking "wow, guess I won't bother working late." :-)

Aaargh! wtf? Sorry to hear about the loss of your job, but if there's an upside it's that it's less suckage. I'm a sincere believer in not having jobs suck. I'm surprised that they are only providing one month's severance - isn't there some sort of law requiring at least six weeks? (Although technically it works out to be six weeks' notice and they just don't want you to come in once you're notified)

Agree with one of the previous comments - talk to Kevin about Google.

Not in CA. Either party can end things with no notice.

You're right and I should know better. Nevertheless, for some reason I keep misremembering this six weeks thing.

Good luck with the job hunt.

Wow, I knew things sucked, but I am sorry that it ended that way.

Monitor?

My monitor finished dying.

I can help! I have a spare 21", 17", and 15" (with speakers). I am more than happy to let you take any of them to use. They aren't flat screen, but they all work and I am not using them.

I can swing one over as early as tonight. (I have a car, so I can transport these things. ;-) )

Ooh! My old monitor wasn't flat-screen either, so I'm not worried there.

Sure! I'll mention that I won't be home tonight for a bit. My going-away dinner (it'd be lunch, but I was already booked) is tonight, so depending on how late it runs I may not be back 'til lateish. On the other hand, they're coworkers and I'm not a long-time employee, so I may be back by 8.

No worry on the timing, My plans for most of the weekend are very flexible.

Just give me a call if you are home at a reasonable hour tonight (before 9), I have something to pick up at your place anyway. If not, let me know when is good.

Sounds good. I'll call when I get there. And yeah, my weekend's not really planned out either.

Real real sorry to hear about the job. NetApp would be an amusing choice, for reasons of coincidentally travelled paths -- PalmSource is nestled among their buildings. :-)

My condolences sir. Congratulations on assisted escape from suckage.

Ping me with resume and what you actually *want* to be working/playing with....

Well, I'm basically looking for a "Software Engineer" spot. Beyond that, I tend to judge case-by-case. For instance, I tend not to go for financial software, but that's more because their problems tend to be boring to solve and their coding environments tend to suck than for any other reason.

A year-outdated resume is at "http://www.angelbob.com/resume/cur_resume.doc" (Word format, it's what most people seem to want). There's actually a more up-to-date resume in the same directory, I'm just not done editing it yet.

I'm sorry that I didn't catch up with you later in the evening yesterday to visit and commiserate about sucky jobs that end unannouncedly.

May you find entertaining and supportive* work before the severance runs out.

*supportive, as in, work that pays you well enough to support yourself :-)

I was away visiting my family, and things blow up.

I'm sorry, and I hope you get a better job. Soon.
