noahgibbsSold my truck this weekend. It was kind of a surprise. I'd been trying to figure out what to do about it -- it continued to present me with large repair bills very regularly.
On Saturday, on the way to the Fremont Hub, a guy in an SUV pulled up beside me and started gesturing over to the right. I wondered if something was on fire, or I had a flat. I pulled off onto a side street, as did he.
Turned out he ran a body shop, and first offered to repair the dent in my driver's-side door. I said I wasn't really interested. The door would, I'd been told, need to be replaced, so cosmetic repair to it wasn't high on my list of priorities.
He then offered to buy it because his brother had recently moved to the bay and needed a decent truck quick, regardless of how it looked. I'd been trying to figure out how to dump it without it costing me money, or come up with a replacement, or... I dunno. Something. It was simply too expensive to repair it as often as it wanted, particularly for how often I used it.
I named a figure which, given the damage, no dealership would have considered, even as a trade-in value. He agreed. Later he wound up paying me a bit less... But it still beat Kelly Blue Book value minus what it'd cost me to repair it, especially with the additional problem he discovered while examining it (water in the oil, likely from a head gasket preparing to bid farewell to this world).
This was a way to get rid of it and actually get a bit of money out of it, so I'll take it. The truck going away will nicely cover the hot tub repair bill. The other money I owe is already sitting around, waiting to be given to people I owe it to... I think this puts me into "no big unpredictable pending bills" financial-land. Yay! Not that my house is paid off or anything, but I've got things like credit cards well in hand, at least 'til I find out what April 15th will cost me this year :-)
I'll probably need to buy some luggage for my bike... But it turns out safeway.com delivers in my area, so it may not be as much of a pain as I was afraid of. Could be worse.

Cool about the truck; you and he both apparently got a great deal! And it sounds like came to this accommodation with very little effort by either of you, which is just terrific!
I had just a motorcycle as transport (including groceries) for about a year. It wasn't too bad except when it was really cold and rainy and windy. I was able to fit a week's worth of groceries in a pair of average-size soft saddlebags. You'll do fine.

I've got a rack that works for Givi luggage which I've never attached, but no luggage, which is why I've never attached it :-) I got a good deal on it secondhand, never-used, but the luggage costs a lot more than it did and I haven't gotten around to it yet...
So I suppose that makes this a good time to do that. It'll let me keep my jacket out on the bike instead of bringing it in to work, too. I think. Those Givi hard cases are big, so I can probably get away with it.
