I often dislike going to zoos because they make me sad, but I saw a gibbon exhibit in Cinncinnati that gave me great joy. I'm so glad the trend toward larger spaces and more similar habitats has begun to spread across the country.
They had two gibbons when I was there. They were very cute. One was very energetic -- seemed like he was doing laps through the trees on their little island. The other mainly just sat there and looked around. It was a bit cold, s/he might not have been feeling all that active.
Sadly, we missed them. I think there were some around, but when we went looking for them, the closest we found were vervets. I know the SF zoo had a gorgeous lemur exhibit when last I was there, but I didn't see lemurs at the Oakland zoo...
Maybe I just didn't wander their way, though I tried to. Maybe they were busy being nocturnal.
Go monkeys! If you ever happen to find yourself in Europe you should take a trip to the Apenheul Primate Park about 80 km from Amsterdam.
It's one of those "I can't believe they (lawyers, politicians, etc) still let them do this" experiences where you mingle with spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys and lemurs.
It's an amazing experience, I'll post some photos of our trip sometime. The highlight was either getting my hand whacked by an annoyed lemur or almost having my glasses stolen by a spider monkey.

and when I die
I expect to find
