The Harry Potter books are pretty good. I'm especially impressed that there's real character development among older characters rather than just leaving them behind. Like, even non-major characters.

Not done with 'em yet, but getting farther.

Heh :-) I just liked it 'cause of the comic it came from and the fact that choo-choo is cute, but hey... Who am I to argue about the resemblance?

Maybe I need to dress up as Choo-Choo Bear dressed up as Alex from A Clockwork Orange next Halloween. That'd be amusingly traumatic.

The first book had a great deal of English to Americanisms, starting first with the title (Philosopher's Stone vs Sorcerers Stone). I seem to recall an article that said the publishers figured that people could grasp the concepts, and stuck with Rowling's original English words. So there shouldn't be much, if anything, changed in book 5.

The 5th has way more Britishisms in the American version- even a few that my English coworkers suspect most Americans won't get ("revisions" for studying for exams). I compared the first few pages side-by-side and the differences were a few nitpicky grammar things that might represent differences between American and British English.

In one of the books . . . the fifth I think, they are talking about class assignments and they are assigned 12 inches on a specific subject, scrolls I presume. I wonder if they translate that in the British release?

I was skeptical at first too, but I think the Harry Potter books are really good. They reminded me of when I went to school and we all had to wear uniforms, and everything was very ritualized. It made me feel nostalgic.

If you like them, you might also like the Lemonysnicket books, which are slightly more literary but just as fun.
