I have no idea what I'd put in an end-of-year summary. I'm keeping on keeping on just fine, though.
The kids are growing well and happily, by and large. Certainly they're no worse off now than a year ago. We continue to settle in well. We continue to all enjoy living together in a house that feels like it's near the edge of everything.
Apparently we can apply for permanent settlement faster than we thought -- the kids don't need to take the Life in the UK test, the wife and I have study materials being shipped to us, and we can apply once we take it. We thought we'd need to wait another almost-two-years. But there were some changes to our visa, small but for the better, and we can just do that now. That's good. It's one of the few niggling worries I knew we had coming.
Working at Shopify and on YJIT remain good. We're now basically production-ready, YJIT still ships with Ruby, the Christmas release was uneventful. I need to figure out what *my* next sub-project is, but overall things are going well. Okay, Google Compute Platform is a pain in the backside, but I *think* I'm finally done dealing with the mechanics of it for awhile and I can get back to ordinary-annoying sorts of work.
I've been playing the piano for about a year now. Maybe slightly more? I forget, plus I didn't have a single definite start date. But I can play a few basic songs well (beginner versions of Ode to Joy, Brahms Hungarian Dance, Pachelbel's Canon, Fur Elise) and some others not-so-well (Brahms Lullaby, the Blue Danube Waltz, Bach's Prelude in C.) Had some lessons, then no lessons, probably time to see about finding lessons again. Slowly getting more comfortable in keys other than C major. I bought a Kawai ES-120, really too nice for my current skill level, and it's fantastic. I don't usually buy electronic toys, but I can't bring myself to regret this one.
I'm most of the way through writing my third book, also for programmers. It's feeling un-dramatic, in a good way. But also like I'm not sure what my next bit of personal advancement looks like. As with the rest of it, "successful but not, like, breakthrough successful" is feeling good, but also kinda quiet and unremarkable. But it's been a great year for people reminding me that my first book did a lot of good for folks, starting many years ago. So it's probably good to put more of that out into the world.
