For the record - ravenslost and I discovered that you should never try to make beef stroganoff the day after Superbowl Sunday.

There is no sour cream to be found in the grocery stores.

I suggested that too, but they pooh-poohed me. I think she ended up mixing regular cream in.

Yep, plain yogurt would have worked just fine.

Nope, did that in addition to the regular cream. I was desperate, you see. I tried some of everything.

I made this err, crock pot variant recently that used cream cheese instead of the sour cream. I don't eat sour cream (ew!). I found it a quite reasonable substitute, though it does sort of leave teensy tinsy cheese flecks in the sauce. It had more tang than regular cream would, though.
