Apr. 19th, 2005 12:08 amI was called by a charity today, collecting for fire-orphaned kids and disabled firefighters, or something very much like that.
Ordinarily, I'd seriously consider donating. I certainly consider the support of disabled firefighters to be a good cause. Always have, and I got more sympathetic over the whole 9/11 thing when everybody else did.
But I'd heard some disturbing things about other collection efforts, and thought a particular question was worth asking. I asked how much money the programs got, and how much the fundraising company kept.
15%. That sounded okay. No, wait. 15% is what went to the programs. The fundraising company was keeping 85%!
I chose *not* to donate. I should probably see if there's some way I can donate to the programs more directly.
